Biotechnology is a combination of two subjects- Biology and Technology. Broadly speaking, it brings together concepts of Biology and Engineering. However at length it is a blend of subjects related to Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering. In the 21st century, biotechnology has impacted all living systems starting from the improvements in medicine, diagnosis and pharmaceuticals to food quality, agricultural systems, bio-resources, waste management and bio-fuels.
B.Sc. Biotechnology is a three-year degree programme.
The versatile field of Biotechnology is a set of powerful tools that employ living organisms (or parts of organisms) to make or modify products, improve plants or animals, or develop microorganisms for specific uses. Biotechnology is a research oriented science. It covers a wide variety of subjects like Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Virology, Chemistry and Engineering. It also has tight links and relationships with many other subjects like Health and Medicine, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Cropping system and Crop Management, Ecology, Cell Biology, Soil Science and Soil Conservation, Bio-statistics, Plant Physiology, Seed Technology and the like. Biotechnology is the use of living things, especially cells and bacteria in industrial process.
At Renaissance University the first year of this course will focus on the core subjects of biotechnology to ensure a good grounding in the fundamental concepts. Specialization is offered in the second and third year.
The course contents cover all aspects of the applied and core biotechnology including molecular biology, genetic engineering, plant and animal tissue culture, bioprocess technology, advanced microbial technology, intellectual property rights and patents, industry relations and entrepreneurship etc.
